What is the tipping culture in Dubai? And how much should you give?

Unlike some other countries where tipping is almost obligatory, such as in the US, the tipping culture in Dubai and the rest of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is much more relaxed.

It is usually not a standard expectation, but it is certainly appreciated. However, it is useful to know when, how much, and to whom you might consider giving a tip.

Where and how much do you tip in Dubai?

• 1. Restaurants In dining establishments, tipping is not mandatory but is customary if you are satisfied with the service. A tip of around 10% is fine, and for higher bills, you might consider AED 20 to AED 50 (approximately €5 to €12 / £4 to £10). Always check if a 'service charge' is already included on the bill, as this is sometimes added.
• 2. Cleaners and domestic help If you hire a cleaner via an app or company, a small tip of AED 10 to AED 20 (€2.50 to €5 / £2 to £4) per visit is reasonable, especially if the work is done well. For regular help, you could also consider a monthly bonus.
• 3. Car washers At shopping centres or petrol stations, cars are often washed while you are shopping. A tip of AED 5 to AED 10 (€1.25 to €2.50 / £1 to £2) is common if you are happy with the result.
• 4. Beauty salons At hairdressers, nail studios, or massage salons, you typically tip between AED 10 and AED 30 (€2.50 to €7.50 / £2 to £6), depending on the length and quality of the treatment. It is not an obligation but is certainly appreciated.
• 5. Delivery drivers Whether it is food, groceries, or parcels, delivery drivers often work in extreme heat. A tip of AED 5 to AED 10 (€1.25 to €2.50 / £1 to £2) makes a real difference to them. Many people prefer to give this in cash rather than via an app, as there is doubt about whether digital tips actually reach the driver.

Tipping in cash or via an app?

There is much debate about whether tips via delivery apps actually reach the driver. Many users therefore prefer to give cash. The advantage of giving cash is the direct certainty that the recipient gets the money. An extra bottle of water or a soft drink is also often appreciated, especially during the hot summer months.

No tip = no problem

It is important to know that you are not obliged to tip in Dubai. You will not be judged for not tipping as you might be in some other countries. If you cannot afford it, or simply believe that companies should pay their staff decently, it is perfectly fine not to give anything extra.
